Sugars are simple carbohydrates that are absorbed rapidly into the body. Sugars are found in high amounts in juices, corn syrup, honey and cane sugar to name a few. Sugars are absorbed very quickly into the blood stream, leading to a sharp spike in blood sugar level, which affects the body’s metabolism. When the free sugar in a meal is fully metabolized, blood sugar level drops rapidly leading to a feeling of hunger. Complex carbohydrates like those found in white breads and rolls and whole grain breads and rolls are digested more slowly, releasing the stored sugar gradually, giving the body time to metabolize it over a period of hours. This keeps blood sugar levels at a moderate level and suppresses appetite and hunger.
